Background of the Study
Peer-to-peer learning has become a recognized method of enhancing the educational experience, allowing students to collaborate and share knowledge in ways that can strengthen their understanding of academic content. In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, there is a growing recognition of the importance of peer learning, yet there is a lack of formalized platforms to encourage and facilitate this process in secondary schools. Students often miss out on valuable opportunities to collaborate with their peers, especially when traditional classroom settings do not allow for sufficient interaction.
The development of a Peer-to-Peer Learning Platform would address this gap by providing an online space where students can interact with one another, share resources, and collaborate on academic tasks. This platform would allow students to upload notes, participate in study groups, ask questions, and engage in academic discussions. The platform would also include features for monitoring participation, providing feedback, and encouraging a collaborative learning culture. Additionally, it would serve as a supplementary resource for students who may not have access to certain learning materials or teachers outside of school hours.
The platform would be designed using a mobile-first approach, ensuring that students can access the system on their smartphones or tablets. Technologies such as Flutter for cross-platform development and Firebase for real-time database management would be used to create the application. This digital solution would not only support peer learning but also promote the development of essential skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving among students.
Statement of the Problem
Secondary school students in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council lack access to a structured, accessible platform for engaging in peer-to-peer learning. As a result, students often struggle to collaborate and share knowledge effectively outside of the classroom, limiting their academic development and engagement. The absence of such a platform creates missed opportunities for students to benefit from collaborative learning, which has been shown to enhance academic performance and critical thinking skills.
Objectives of the Study
To design and develop a Peer-to-Peer Learning Platform for secondary schools in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State.
To assess the effectiveness of the platform in enhancing peer collaboration and academic performance.
To evaluate the satisfaction of students with the usability and functionality of the Peer-to-Peer Learning Platform.
Research Questions
How effective is the Peer-to-Peer Learning Platform in promoting collaboration and academic performance among secondary school students in Maiduguri?
What features of the platform are most utilized by students in their peer-to-peer learning activities?
How do students perceive the usability and impact of the Peer-to-Peer Learning Platform on their academic experience?
Research Hypotheses
The Peer-to-Peer Learning Platform will significantly improve collaboration and academic performance among secondary school students in Maiduguri.
Students will frequently use features such as study groups, resource sharing, and academic discussions on the platform.
Students will report high levels of satisfaction with the usability and impact of the Peer-to-Peer Learning Platform.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it addresses the need for a structured and accessible platform for peer-to-peer learning in secondary schools in Maiduguri. The Peer-to-Peer Learning Platform will help students improve their academic performance, develop critical thinking and collaboration skills, and foster a supportive learning environment that extends beyond the traditional classroom.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design, development, and evaluation of the Peer-to-Peer Learning Platform in secondary schools within Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State. The study will assess its effectiveness in promoting academic collaboration and student satisfaction. Limitations may include challenges related to students' access to mobile devices and the internet.
